Fishermen’s Memorial, 2000, bronze, by Kathryn Hogg, Port Dover, Ontario

Standing proudly at the end of Harbour Street near the pier and lighthouse in Port Dover, Fishermen’s Memorial (2000) is a powerful 11-foot bronze monument created by artist Kathryn Hogg in collaboration with Alex Godden of Simcoe, Ontario. Commissioned by the Lake Erie Fishermen’s Association, the memorial pays tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the commercial fishermen who worked the often-dangerous waters of Lake Erie. Set upon a massive stone base engraved with the names of fishermen who lost their lives while engaged in their trade, the sculpture serves as both a landmark and a place of remembrance. Its commanding presence overlooking the harbour reflects the deep connection between the community and the lake, honouring generations of fishermen and offering a solemn reminder of the risks they faced to sustain their families and livelihoods.
